How can you use this guide?
Use the guide as a checklist. Your clinic may be good at keeping you well informed, but it’s nice to have some general questions on hand before your meeting with the clinic. It’s a long list with a lot of questions, so keep in mind that not all of the questions will be relevant for you.
Get a good overview of your type of treatment
- Which type of treatment am I/we offered and why?
- What are my chances of getting pregnant?
- How many rounds of treatment do we have?
- What will be the next step if I/we are unsuccessful in our current treatment?
Questions about time (because waiting can be tough)
- How long before I/we start treatment?
- Do we contact you or do you contact us?
Questions about the treatment
- What is the process? Step for step explanation
- Do I need hormone treatment?
- Does egg retrieval hurt?
- Does insemination hurt?
- Will I be sedated during the treatment?
- When do we provide a semen sample?
- Do we provide the semen sample at home or at the clinic?
- What side effects and risks are connected to the treatment?
Questions about the medicine
- What medicine will I be taking?
- How and when do I take the medicine?
- Will I be provided with the medicine at the clinic or do I need to pick it up at the pharmacy?
- Do I need to store the medicine in a particular way?
- What does the medicine cost (and what should we be expecting regarding expenses in general?)
- What are the side effects to the different types of medication?
- If you’re taking other types of medication, it may be a good idea to ask if you can take the different types of medicine at the same time
Questions about the time after being in treatment
- Can I go to work after being in treatment?
- How long do we need to wait to have sex?
- Can I do sports after being in treatment? Is there anything I shouldn’t do?
- When can we take a pregnancy test?
- How are the risks of having an abortion?
- When is our next appointment with the clinic?
- What should we do if I start to bleed?
- When can we start the next round if we don’t get pregnant this time?
